Fresh off an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen, women’s basketball coach Sue Guevara agreed to a new five-year contract that goes through the 2022-23 season, Central Michigan Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford announced today.
Guevara and the Chippewas are coming off the finest women’s basketball season in CMU history in which they went 30-5, captured the Mid-American Conference regular-season and conference tournament titles, beat No. 24 LSU and No. 10 Ohio State in the first two rounds of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship before falling against No. 6-ranked Oregon in the Sweet Sixteen.
Guevara, in 11 seasons at CMU, is the program’s winningest coach with a record of 204-149, and the Chippewas have won at least 20 games seven of the past eight seasons.
“This puts Coach G. exactly where she has taken this program – to the top of the MAC and among the best in the Group of Five schools,” Alford said. “Student-athletes thrive in this program. The cumulative GPA for the women’s basketball team is 3.3, coaches and players volunteer in the community, and this team, year after year, plays hard to the final horn.”
The Chippewas have reached the NCAA Tournament twice and the Women’s National Invitation Tournament five times under Guevara. CMU is 75-25 overall and 46-8 in the MAC in the last three seasons. Senior forward Tinara Moore, who earned Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention, was the MAC Player of the Year. Four players – seniors Cassie Breen and Aleah Swary and juniors Reyna Frost and Presley Hudson – were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team.
“I’m very grateful to President (George E.) Ross and Michael Alford,” Guevara said. “Both of them know how much I love being at Central Michigan. There is no place I’d rather be.
“The players and staff who chose to come to CMU and the support of the community and Central Michigan have made this a very special place. That support will help us to continue to be successful.”
