IPFW women’s basketball head coach Niecee Nelson has announced the appointment of Marcie Alberts as an assistant coach for the 2016-17 season.
Alberts has spent the last eight seasons coaching at the collegiate level, three as an assistant coach at IPFW and five as the head coach at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. On Saturday, May 21, Alberts will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of her exceptional achievements as a player in both high school and college.
“Marcie is a tireless work horse who is invested in contributing to the success of this program,” Nelson says. “She has a great rapport with our student-athletes and takes great pride in helping them develop not only as players but also as people. Marcie is a competitor with great energy and will be an asset to this staff.”
In her five seasons with the Student Princes (2008-13), she handled all aspects of coaching: on-court instruction, recruiting, game plans, fund raising, scheduling, scheduling of travel, and community service. Under her guidance, two Heidelberg players reached the 1,000-point club. She also coached a pair of All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) performers as well as multiple Academic All-OAC student-athletes.
Prior to arriving at Heidelberg, Alberts was at Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio from 2001-08, compiling a 117-45 record. During her tenure there, she led the Red Riders to three conference and district championships, and a state quarterfinal appearance. She was a three-time district and conference Coach of the Year honoree. In 2006, Alberts was selected as a coach for the Ohio North-South All-Star Game.
Alberts spent the 1999-2001 seasons serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Toledo, where the Rockets won the Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2001 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
A four-year letterwinner and team captain at The Ohio State University, Alberts was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 1997. While with the Buckeyes, she became one of the most prolific three-point shooters in program history. During the 1996-97 season, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point field goals made and set at the time a conference record for 3-point attempts in a season. As a sophomore, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point shooting percentage. She set a then school record in 1996-97 for 3-pointers in a season with 86, and stills holds the record for the most 3-pointers by a senior as well as free throw percentage by a senior. Alberts left Ohio State second in 3-pointers made, 3-point attempts and free throw percentage, fourth in 3-point percentage and ninth in assists.
After graduating from Ohio State, Alberts went on to play for the now defunct Cleveland Rockers during the inaugural season of the WNBA in 1997. She received a bachelor of science degree from Ohio State and a master’s degree in recreation administration from Toledo.
