Musick inks contract extension at Oral Roberts

Head Coach Kelsi Musick has agreed to a contract extension with the Oral Roberts women’s basketball team, ORU Athletics announced Monday afternoon.

“Coach Musick has done a wonderful job with our women’s basketball program,” said University President Dr. William Wilson. “She has quickly grasped the ORU ethos and has led the team to significant success, including this year’s invitation to the WNIT. ORU is dedicated to building a championship program, which is why we’re making a long-term commitment to an exceptional coach. The future of women’s basketball at ORU is bright.”

Musick led the Golden Eagles to their first 20-win season since 2011-12. Along the way, ORU saw its best start to a season since 1982, defeated crosstown rival, Tulsa, for the first time since 2017-18, and swept South Dakota for the first time ever. In just her second year at the helm, Musick has led ORU to two straight semifinal appearances in the Summit League Championship.

“In just two short years, it is clear ORU women’s basketball is building something special,” said Athletic Director Tim Johnson. “We could not be more proud of Coach Musick and the job her staff has done bringing a renewed energy and expectation to the program. She has done a phenomenal job elevating the team to compete for championships while building a championship culture and developing young women in mind, body, and spirit,” he continued. “Winning over 20 games for the first time since 2011 and earning a spot in the post season for the first time since 2015 (WNIT), there is no doubt the best is yet to come for ORU women’s basketball with Coach Musick at the helm and we are excited to announce this long-term commitment.”

Musick has transformed ORU women’s basketball with her high octane, dribble-drive offense. In her first season, the Golden Eagles finished with the 16th highest scoring offense in the country averaging 78.1 points per game. In year two, ORU was the 8th highest scoring team in the nation scoring a blistering 81.8 points per game. Musick has quickly proven to be an elite recruiter, bringing in this year’s Summit League Freshman of the Year (Emily Robinson), Newcomer of the Year (Taleyah Jones), and Sixth Woman of the Year (Jalei Oglesby). Musick’s Golden Eagle squad led the Summit League in a variety of other categories this season, as well, including assist/turnover ratio, offensive rebounds per game, rebounds per game, steals per game, fewest turnovers per game, and turnovers forced per game.

“Oral Roberts is such a special place, and I’m both excited and blessed for the opportunity to continue to grow and build the women’s basketball program here at ORU,” said Head Coach Kelsi Musick. “We are very appreciative of the support from our fans and administration and look forward to continued success ahead.”
