Mount Mercy names Burrell as new Women’s Basketball Coach

Mount Mercy athletics director Paul Gavin has announced the hiring of Shareece Burrell as the new head coach of the Mount Mercy women’s basketball team.

Burrell will have the interim tag dropped after leading the team since January 13. Over that span, the Mustangs secured seven victories, including a win over Missouri Valley for the first Heart of America postseason win in program history. Burrell has been instrumental in developing four Heart of America all-conference players this season, with Claudia Vanzant landing on the first team, while Annika Headington earned second team honors, and Malie Marfil and Madison Skelton earned third team.

“I am proud to announce the hiring of Shareece Burrell as our next women’s basketball coach,” added Gavin. “Shareece is committed to the ultimate student-athlete experience and with her championship pedigree, positive energy, and commitment to this university, I have no doubt that women’s basketball will continue to flourish under her leadership.”

“I am honored to be elevated to the role of head coach at Mount Mercy University,” added Burrell. “Being a part of this prestigious program as the assistant coach for the past four years has been a privilege, and I am excited to step into this new position. Thank you to Paul Gavin and Molly Altorfer for this opportunity. I look forward to leading this team as we continue to grow, achieve new heights, and continue to make history. To God be the glory!”

The Des Moines native joined the Mustangs in the fall of 2020 after a four year playing career at Bradley University, followed by a coaching stint at the University of Northern Iowa.
