Coppin State University has named Darrell Mosley as the next head coach of its women’s basketball program, Director of Athletics Derek Carter announced Monday afternoon. Mosley spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Arizona State, including the last two as the Sun Devils’ associate head coach.
“I’m thrilled to introduce Darrell Mosley as our new head coach for women’s basketball,” Carter said. “Darrell brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to developing young women both on and off the court. He turned Lincoln into a perennial contender in the CIAA and has worked as an assistant for several years at the highest level of college basketball. I’m eager to see how he leads our program to new heights in this evolving era of college athletics.”
Mosley has 15 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including a six-year stretch as the head women’s basketball coach at Division II Lincoln (Pa.).
“I am honored to join the Coppin State family and lead the women’s basketball program into its next chapter,” said Mosley. “I’m committed to building a culture of excellence both on and off the court that reflects the pride and spirit of Coppin State University. I would like to thank President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, Director of Athletics Derek Carter, and the selection committee for entrusting me with this opportunity and I can’t wait to get to work.”
This past season, the Sun Devils, who were in their first season in the Big 12, had a pair of players earn All-Conference honors in Tyi Skinner, who played for Mosley previously at University of Delaware, and Baltimore native, Jalyn Brown. In December, he was among 32 coaches nationwide selected to participate in the 2025 WBCA Next Generation Institute, an education program for experienced assistants who aspire to become collegiate head coaches.
Mosley was promoted to associate head coach after his first season at ASU where he was instrumental in the development of the team’s talented backcourt. Jaddan Simmons and Skinner, who was one of the Nation’s top scorers (19.3 ppg), both earned All-Pac 12 honors by the league’s head coaches. Skinner was also named to the media’s 15-member All-Conference team. Mosley was also named to the Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS) Women’s Basketball Black Coaches Watch List in March 2023.
Following a season at University of Delaware under head coach Natasha Adair, where the Blue Hens won the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Title and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013, he joined Adair in Tempe. In his lone season at UD, Jasmine Dickey joined Elena Delle Donne as the only players in school history to receive back-to-back CAA Player of the Year awards. Dickey went on to get drafted by the Dallas Wings the following month in the third round of the WNBA Draft.
In six seasons as head coach at Lincoln, Mosley guided the Lions to 82 wins, the second-most in program history, from 2015 to 2021. Lincoln won over 55 percent of its games during that stretch and advanced to three-straight CIAA Semifinals from 2017 to 2019. In his final complete season during the 2019-20 campaign, he was named the league’s Coach of the Year and a finalist for WHoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year following a school-record 23 victories.
Throughout his tenure at the helm of the LU women’s program, five Lions earned All-CIAA honors with a pair of All-Rookie Team selections. Highlighting those players was Kwanza Murray, a two-team First Team selection who was named the 2019 ECAC and 2020 CIAA Player of the Year. Murray was the first player in the program’s Division II era to earn All-Region and All-America accolades and the first in program history to sign a professional basketball contract.
Making an immediate impact with the women’s program, Mosley eclipsed the 50-win mark following a 17-14 record in the 2018-19 season. Guiding the Lions to a third-place finish and a victory in the conference tournament in their first season, Mosley’s teams were contenders in the CIAA year after year with several wins over nationally ranked teams and three Division I programs.
Prior to being named the head coach at Lincoln, Mosley served as an assistant coach on the Lions’ men’s basketball staff at his alma mater for five seasons where he played a vital role in the team’s turnaround of success. In his final season on the men’s staff, Lincoln had its first 20-win campaign as a Division II institution and won the 2014 ECAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship.
Born and raised in Chester, Pa., Mosley played collegiately at Delaware State (2006-08), where he helped the Hornets to a regular season conference title and NIT appearance. Mosley transferred to Lincoln (2008-10) to finish out his basketball career where he became the starting point guard and team captain.
