Morong steps down as Women’s Basketball Coach at Central Maine CC

Central Maine Community College Women’s Basketball head coach Andrew Morong announced today his decision to step down from his position leading the Mustangs program.

Morong leaves as a national champion having led Central Maine to its fourth United States Collegiate Athletic Association title in 2026, following previous victories in 2022, 2019, and 2017. The team’s 29-1 overall record this season also led to another Yankee Small College Conference regular season and tournament championship, as well as a national coaching staff of the year award.

“Andrew has put CMCC women’s basketball on the national map and is respected across the country,” said athletic director Dave Gonyea. “His commitment to Central Maine and dedication to his players are unmatched. Replacing him will be a challenge, as he has been one of only two coaches in the history of the program. His record and accomplishments truly speak for themselves.”

Morong took the reins of the Mustangs program from Mike Bridges in 2011, compiling an incredible overall record of 376-55 over his 14 seasons in charge. He found immediate success, leading the team to the YSCC Tournament title that first year, the first of 12 total conference championships, which includes winning the last nine consecutive YSCC regular season and tournament crowns.

His teams made 12 appearances at the USCAA National Championships, posting a 22-9 record in the tournament and reaching the national title game seven times. During his tenure, Morong mentored 29 USCAA All-American and eight WBCA All-American selections, as well as 36 Academic All-Americans. Four players were named national tournament MVP and 13 made the USCAA all-tournament team. His squads rewrote the program record books, setting marks for future student-athletes to aim for.

“CMCC and this program have been a defining part of my life for more than a decade,” said Morong. “I am deeply grateful for every player who has worn this uniform, past and present. Spending time with them, challenging them, learning from them, and watching them grow as people has been one of the purest joys of my life. The relationships built through this program will stay with me forever.”

“I am thankful to the CMCC administration for its consistent support of athletics and, more importantly, for its commitment to providing female student-athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest level while pursuing their academic goals. That support has been instrumental in shaping the culture and success of this program. I would also like to thank David Gonyea for giving me the opportunity to lead this program in 2011. That trust altered the course of my career and my life, and I will always be grateful for it.”

“Finally, I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to my wife and children. They were just as much a part of this coaching journey as anyone else. Their sacrifices, patience, and unwavering support made everything possible, and their presence throughout this experience has meant more to me than words can express. It has been an honor to serve Central Maine Community College and to represent this institution, our student-athletes, and our community. I leave this role with great pride in what the program stands for and full confidence that its strongest chapters are still ahead.”

A search for the new head coach of the CMCC women’s basketball program will begin immediately.
