Lazar Milinkovic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, has joined the Morehead State women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.

"I am familiar with Morehead State and its tradition. Through the interview process with (Head) Coach (Greg) Todd and (Assistant) Coach (Jim) Brown and being here for a few weeks already, I have seen how this university has grown," he said. "I want to thank (President) Dr. Wayne Andrews and (Athletic Director) Brian Hutchinson for allowing me the opportunity to help shape this program into something this university and community are proud of."

Milinkovic served the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Marshall. He worked with 15 student-athletes who were named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Milinkovic mentored Shay Weaver, who set the school single-season three-point record in 2013-13, and two others who rank on Marshall’s top-10 single-season three-point list.

"I feel like my best assets for this coaching staff at Morehead State are player development and international recruiting," Milinkovic said. "Even the top players can always get better, and I am excited to help all our players develop their games."

Milinkovic served as an assistant boy’s coach at Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Prep School in 2010-11 and 2011-12. He coached Andrew Wiggins, who was an All-American as a freshman this past season at Kansas. While he was on staff, the program garnered top-five national rankings in USA Today, Sports Illustrated and Max Preps.

Prior to his time in Huntington, Milinkovic spent two seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10) as a boy’s assistant coach at Mountain State Academy, a prep school in Beckley, W.Va. He coached Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 selection in the 2013 NBA Draft. The program advanced to the ESPN National High School Invitational both seasons. He concluded his playing career with one season (2007-08) at the academy, where he propelled the team to a 37-5 mark.

He also coached Jelena Milovanovic, a current member of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, in Serbia. Milinkovic has been a head coach at the AAU level, leading the Key Players from Huntington and Beckley Wizards.

"Lazar brings a great work ethic and passion for basketball," Todd said. "He is the type of young man that no job is too little or too big to tackle. He has many basketball connections in this area, and I feel he will be valuable in international recruiting."

He earned a bachelor’s degree in applied management from Ohio University in 2012 and received his master’s degree in adult education from Marshall in 2014.
