MILESTONE: Bernero collects career win #300

Trailing by as many as 16 points in the game, the Carthage women’s basketball team fueled a second-half comeback to defeat Elmhurst 80-74 on Wednesday night in R.A. Faganel Hall for head coach Tim Bernero‘s 300th career victory.

With career win number 300, head coach Bernero is now the 70th active coach in Division III to have hit the milestone. Bernero now joins previous men’s basketball head coach Bosko Djurickovic as the only two members of the 300-win club at Carthage, in a pair of programs that have been around since the first decade of the 1900’s.

Bernero is in his 19th season as head coach. He is Carthage’s winningest women’s basketball coach and coming into the season, ranked fourth on the all-time College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin conference wins list. With Carthage’s win over Coe College on Nov. 27, 2010, Bernero passed Diane Mizerka on the Carthage wins list.

Bernero has helped Carthage reach the upper echelon of NCAA Division III women’s basketball, averaging just over 16 wins over the past 10 seasons. The program has consistently been ranked in the top-25 and in the national statistical rankings over that period, while Bernero’s teams have an 8-5 record in NCAA tournament play.
