Monroe College is excited to announce the appointment of Camille McLellan as the new head coach for the Monroe College Mustangs women’s basketball program. Coach McLellan joins the Mustangs after most recently working with the Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s basketball team.
“We are excited to appoint Camille McLellan as our new head women’s basketball coach,” said Asst. Vice President-Athletics Luis Melendez. “‘Coach Mac’s’ core values and passion for the sport align perfectly with our mission statement. I am especially impressed with her level of integrity and character as well as her academic accomplishments.”
McLellan recently wrapped up her time as a graduate assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson, working under head coach Angelika Szumilo. The 2022-23 Knights had a record-breaking season, setting a program record with 24 victories while securing the Northeast Conference Regular-Season Championship, a winning tradition she hopes to carry over into her time at the helm at Monroe.
“I’d like to thank Luis Melendez, President Marc Jerome and the members of the hiring committee for this opportunity to continue the progress toward success within the women’s basketball program,” said McLellan. “I’m honored our President and Athletic Director have confidence in me to run the women’s basketball program here at Monroe.”
At FDU, McLellan was responsible for assisting with the point guard position and for breaking down film. She assisted in the preparation of game scouting reports alongside the head coach and staff. McLellan also played an integral role in recruiting, coordinating team travel, managing game day and practice operations, and supporting academic performance and community service initiatives.
“I’m looking forward to creating a team culture of diversity, winning, and growth,” said McLellan. “I’m thrilled to continue working in my passion and doing so at my new home with the Mustangs. Excited doesn’t fully explain how great I feel about this opportunity to continue on positively influencing young lives.”
Prior to her time at Fairleigh Dickinson, McLellan served as the Coordinator of Recruiting and Player Development for the Fordham University women’s basketball program. In this role, she demonstrated her ability to develop players’ skills, scout opponents, create marketing strategies, and coordinate recruitment travel logistics. McLellan also gained expertise in social media management and multimedia content creation.
McLellan’s coaching journey at the collegiate level began during her time at The Ohio State University, where she served as a graduate manager with the Buckeyes women’s basketball team. At Ohio State, she was part of a staff that led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Regular Season Championship in 2021-22. McLellan assisted coaches with drills, clock management and practice operations, while supporting in official and unofficial campus recruiting operations for prospective student-athletes.
McLellan’s coaching experience extends beyond the collegiate level. She has also made significant contributions to high school and AAU basketball programs, including serving as the head freshman coach at Thomas Worthington High School. During her tenure, she successfully implemented practice and game plans, established skill development programs, and contributed to scouting reports.
McLellan also spent many years at One Accord Sports, where she was the Director of Basketball Operations, while also serving as Camp Director and a personal trainer. In addition to her basketball coaching expertise, McLellan has also worked as a wellness educator at Bergen’s Promise, where she educated families on healthy lifestyle habits and provided support in goal setting and progress tracking. Her experiences on the basketball court and away from it both make McLellan an exciting addition to the Monroe College community.
“I feel Coach Mac will be an exemplary role model to the young women in our program while setting standards of excellence in all facets of the student-athlete experience,” said Melendez. “She will be a wonderful addition to the Monroe College Athletics Department.”
McLellan earned a master of sports coaching and leadership degree from Ohio State in July 2022. She also holds a bachelor of science in human development and family science, with a minor in coaching, from Ohio State, graduating Summa Cum Laude in May 2021.
