Northwestern women’s basketball alumnus Maggie Lyon has returned to the program as an assistant coach, head coach Joe McKeown announced Wednesday.
“We are really excited to bring Maggie back to the Wildcats family,” said McKeown “She was one of the great student-athletes in the history of the program and is an outstanding role model for our players. She has a tremendous understanding of our University and the Big Ten Conference, which will help her in the recruiting world. She’s also a tremendous teacher of the game. Her passion and love for Northwestern will make us better from day one.”
Lyon starred as a player for the Wildcats from 2012-16, finishing her career with 1,693 points – the seventh-highest mark in program history – a four-time All-Big Ten honoree. The Wilmette, Ill. native burst onto the scene as a first-year, winning 2012-13 Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors after averaging 12.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach McKeown and Northwestern for giving me this opportunity,” Lyon said. “I love everything about this University and program and am excited to get the opportunity to return as an assistant coach. I loved playing for Coach McKeown and I feel fortunate to now be able to work with and learn from one of the great basketball minds in the game. This team is filled with incredible student-athletes and I’m looking forward to working with them and continuing to build this program.”
A prolific shooter, Lyon holds the Northwestern program-record with 268 career three-point field goals. Her scoring increased each year as a Wildcat, topping out at 16.8 points per game as a senior in 2015-16.
Lyon led Northwestern to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015, as well as Women’s NIT bids in 2014 and 2016. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and former team captain, Lyon played professionally for Unai Ferrol in Spain after graduating from Northwestern.
Previously, Lyon worked for four years in the communications and marketing department at Priority Sports and Entertainment before joining Loyola Chicago as a video coordinator and then being elevated to assistant coach for the 2021-22 season.
