McCombs steps down as Women’s Basketball Coach at George Washington

Caroline McCombs has stepped down as head coach of GW women’s basketball, Director of Athletics Michael Lipitz announced today.  Assistant Coach Doug Novak will serve as interim head coach for the duration of this season.

“We thank Caroline for her leadership over the past four seasons,” said Lipitz. “She invested in her student-athletes and represented the program and university with integrity. We wish her every future success.”

McCombs concludes her tenure with a 55-65 (.458) overall record, including a 23-42 (.354) mark in conference play.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to have led the GW program the last four years,” said McCombs. “As I have poured an enormous amount of love, time and energy into this program and student-athletes, after much thought, it is important to do the same for myself and my family at this time. I wish GW nothing but success moving forward.”

“GW women’s basketball has a proud tradition of excellence, including 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and 23 combined Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles,” said Lipitz. “We are committed to returning the program to the top of the A-10 Conference and to national prominence.”

GW will immediately begin a national search for its next head coach.
