The Bowdoin College Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Kate McCann as its new assistant coach for women’s basketball.
McCann, most recently a graduate assistant coach at Springfield College, assumes the role vacated by Abby Kelly, who is stepping away from coaching after three seasons on the bench with head coach Megan Phelps.
A graduate of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, McCann captained the team her senior season and was a national member of the NCAA Student Athlete Advisory Committee. McCann appeared in 35 career games in a COVID-shortened collegiate career, helping the Knights to the 2022 Skyline Conference title and earning Academic Honor Roll recognition.
Following graduation, McCann accepted a graduate assistant coaching position at Springfield, where she assisted in all aspects of coaching for the Pride while earning a Master’s in Athletic Leadership. She helped lead Springfield to 37 wins over the last two years, including an appearance in the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament.
McCann joins the Polar Bears, who have won back-to-back NESCAC Championships and finished the 2024-25 campaign with a 29-1 record and trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
