May will not return as women’s basketball head coach at Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon University has decided not to retain Trent May as head women’s basketball coach, Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught announced on Tuesday.

In 10 seasons with GCU, May compiled a 195-96 overall record, including a 65-50 record in four seasons of Division I play. The Lopes made two postseason appearances in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational in 2014 and 2016. This past season, GCU was 15-12 overall, while placing fifth in the WAC with a 7-7 conference record.

May arrived at GCU in 2006, serving one year as associate head coach before being promoted to head coach the following season. He came to Grand Canyon after six seasons at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Assistant coach Milee Karre will serve as the program’s head coach in the interim.

A national search for the Lopes’ eighth head coach is now under way.
