Martin named head coach at WWC

Robin Martin, previously head coach of the first women’s basketball team at Penn State Lehigh Valley, has been named head women’s coach at Warren Wilson College.

Martin succeeds Rob Shook, who resigned in April after coaching the Owl women for seven years and leading them to their first national tournament berth in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) this past season.

"The WWC Athletic Department is extremely pleased to have Robin Martin joining our staff," Athletic Director Stacey Enos said. "Aside from having knowledge of the game, she has great awareness and appreciation of the USCAA. She also knows how to attract and recruit student athletes.

"We were impressed with Coach Martin during the interview process. She ran a solid practice session and related well to everyone she met. She also brought her family down to Asheville to be sure they would enjoy living in our community."

A former player and captain at Wesley College in Delaware, Martin was chosen to launch the Penn State Lehigh Valley women’s program in April 2013. Despite that relatively late start preceding the 2013-14 season, she successfully recruited players from Pennsylvania and neighboring states and led the Nittany Lions to nine wins in their inaugural season in the USCAA. She also served as enrollment services specialist and retention coordinator at the university.

"I would like to thank President Steven Solnick and Athletic Director Stacey Enos for the opportunity to lead the Warren Wilson women’s basketball program," Martin said. "I would also like to extend my thanks to the members of the search committee for their dedication in showing me why Warren Wilson is a wonderful place to work and lead.

"During the interview process, I fell in love with the people on campus and the mission of the school. I am eager to build on the program’s recent success amid an atmosphere of hard work for the future. The Warren Wilson family is one I am excited to join."

Before coaching at Penn State Lehigh Valley, Martin was head varsity girls coach at Redbank Valley High School in New Bethlehem, Pa., and junior varsity head coach at Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School in Foxburg, Pa. She begins her duties at Warren Wilson immediately.
