Interim Vice President of Athletics/Athletic Director Jason Fautas has announced the hiring of Mark Schwitzgable as the new head women’s basketball coach at Walsh University.
“We are excited to welcome Mark Schwitzgable as Walsh University’s next head women’s basketball coach,” Interim Vice President of Athletics/Athletic Director Jason Fautas said. “I know Mark will be able to build upon the previous success of the program and continue to elevate the program to new heights within the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, in the Midwest Region and NCAA Division II. Mark brings a great deal of knowledge and passion to Walsh University which will help develop our student-athletes athletically, academically and in the community.”
Schwitzgable will become the tenth head coach in the program’s history, dating back to 1979.
“I could not be more excited to be the next Head Women’s Basketball Coach for the Walsh Cavaliers,” said Schwitzgable. “I want to thank Dr. [Timothy] Collins, Jason Fautas, and the search committee for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to continuing the level of success that this women’s basketball program has established as an annual contender in the GMAC, and I am eager to become a part of the community here in North Canton.”
Over the last seven years, Schwitzgable has been an assistant women’s basketball coach at the Division I and II levels. He comes to North Canton from Valparaiso University, where he was an assistant coach for the last three seasons. With the Beacons, Schwitzgable was a part of a program with three consecutive appearances in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Before his time in Indiana, he was at Urbana University as an assistant women’s basketball coach and the head women’s golf coach for two years.
Schwitzgable’s first foray into coaching was with his alma mater Ohio University. Following his undergrad days as a student manager, he returned to the Bobcats as a graduate assistant. As a GA, he assisted with analytics for the program that made two appearances in the WNIT.
He graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and Sport Administration and followed up with a Master’s of Sport and Recreational Sciences in 2017.
