East Carolina women’s basketball head coach Heather Macy has promoted John Marcum to associate head coach, according to an announcement Thursday.
"John has done an amazing job recruiting and building our roster," Macy said. "We enjoy working together and what he brings has been essential to the development and chemistry within our women’s basketball program."
A 17-year coaching veteran, Marcum completed his first season with the Pirates as assistant coach in 2013-14 and has been instrumental in the program’s recruiting efforts since his arrival.
"I’ve known Coach Macy for years and always respected her basketball knowledge," Marcum said. "I really believe in her system and philosophical approach to basketball, so her program is an easy sell for me. To me, we’re all here as servants to provide the greatest student-athlete experience, graduate kids and put a competitive product on the floor."
Most recently, he played a crucial role in signing a pair of top-10 ranked junior college players, as well as transfers from SEC, ACC and Pac-12 member institutions. Upon his arrival in July 2013, Marcum was able to sign 6’4 post player Ondrea Shaw, who was once a top-50 prospect as a high school player. In her first season at ECU, Shaw broke the school’s single-season record for blocked shots and was a Conference USA All-Defensive Team selection.
Marcum served as assistant coach at Indiana State in 2012-13 and was the head coach at NAIA member Cal Baptist from 2010-12. During the 2010-11 campaign, he led the Lancers to a No. 3 national ranking and the school’s first national tournament appearance since 1982.
A former baseball player at Oklahoma Baptist, Marcum graduated in 1997 and later became an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s basketball programs from 2002-10. In 2002, he served as an assistant coach to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the Oklahoma Storm of the United States Basketball League, leading the Storm to the USBL championship.
