Malone named assistant at Butler

Head Coach Kurt Godlevske put the finishing touches on the Butler women’s basketball coaching staff with the hire of FahKara Malone as an assistant coach. A former standout student-athlete at Purdue University, Malone comes to Butler after working as an assistant coach at the University of Evansville.

"I’m excited to welcome FahKara Malone to Butler University and to the women’s basketball program," Godlevske said. "FahKara is a tireless worker who is passionate about teaching the game of basketball. She has an incredible basketball resume and is a rising star in the coaching ranks. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff."

Malone worked as the Director of Basketball Operations at Evansville for two seasons before making the jump to a full-time assistant coach during the 2013-14 campaign. The Purple Aces went 15-16 in her lone season on the sideline. The team ended the year with a trip to the Women’s Basketball Invitational after winning eight-straight games to close out the regular season.

A native of Evansville, Malone was a four-year high school letter-winner at Memorial before continuing her basketball career at Purdue. Known for her defensive presence on the court, Malone set the Memorial school record for most career steals. Four years later at Purdue, Malone set the same milestone at the collegiate level with 351 career steals as a Boilermaker.

Malone marks one of nine players in Boilermaker history to be a four-year starter, while serving three of those years as a team captain. A starter in 124 of 129 games, Malone totaled 1,057 points and 513 assists while leading her squad to postseason play every year and collecting a plethora of accolades.

The Boilers made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a pair of Elite Eight appearances, and a trip to the WNIT second round during Malone’s playing days. She was a three-time Big Ten All-Defensive Team selection and was equally as talented off the court, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors three times.

As a senior, Malone was selected as a Big Ten Medal of Honor nominee, the conference’s oldest award, which is given annually to a student in the graduating class at each university that demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

An instant impact player at Purdue, Malone was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after starting in 36 of 37 games becoming the first freshman to start in over 90 percent of the games in a single-season since 2000-01. She was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team as a sophomore, taking home Most Outstanding Player honors after leading Purdue to their second Big Ten Championship.

Malone graduated from Purdue in 2010 with a degree in Psychology. She earned her master’s degree from Evansville in Public Health Administration.
