While at Ball State, Steelman was selected as one of the Top 25 Mid-Major Assistant Coaches by CollegeInsider.com.

Before his time at Ball State, the Hickory, N.C. native spent five years as an assistant with Clemson University of the Atlantic Coast Conference. With the Tigers, Steelman worked with both the post and perimeter player development, broke down film, and played a large part in recruiting and evaluation of prospective student-athletes.
