Magarity steps down at Holy Cross; Green named Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Holy Cross women’s basketball head coach Maureen Magarity is stepping down from her position after four seasons, effective immediately, for family reasons. Assistant coach Candice Green will serve as the Crusaders’ interim head coach during the 2024-25 season.

“Since her arrival in Worcester, Maureen Magarity has made a significant impact on the Holy Cross community,” said Kit Hughes, vice president for intercollegiate athletics. “Navigating the global pandemic and orchestrating the return to national prominence for Crusader women’s basketball, Maureen certainly leaves our program better than she found it. While I am sad to see such a talented coach and valued teammate depart Holy Cross, I am excited for Maureen, Charlotte and Caroline to embark on this next step in their journey as a family. I respect Maureen’s decision and wish her nothing but the best moving forward.”

Magarity guided the Crusaders to back-to-back Patriot League Tournament Championships (2023, 2024) and appearances in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament (2023, 2024) including a First Four 72-45 victory against UT Martin in 2024. Holy Cross recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons under Magarity’s tenure. In 2022-23, the Crusaders recorded the second most wins (24) in a single season in program history; in 2023-24, the Crusaders set the program record for wins in the Hart Center Arena (15).

“It is with mixed emotions that I am stepping down from my position as head women’s basketball coach at Holy Cross,” said Maureen Magarity. “While I know the timing is not ideal, after much thought I’ve decided to prioritize and focus on my family. I have truly loved coaching for the past 21 years but I feel excited to be more present for my daughters. I will treasure all the memories we’ve made over the past four years on The Hill and am so grateful for the players, coaches and fans that made this decision so difficult. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished on the biggest stage and know the program will continue to thrive. Thank you to President Rougeau, Kit Hughes and Rose Shea for all of your support over the years.”

Green joined the Holy Cross staff in 2023-24 after four years at Fordham, including serving as the interim head coach in 2022-23. That season, Green helped guide the Rams to a 19-13 mark, a 10-6 Atlantic 10 Conference record and an appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

“We are immensely grateful for Coach Green’s enthusiasm to serve as interim head coach for the 2024-25 season,” said Hughes. “Candice has first-hand experience coaching and mentoring student-athletes during a challenging transition, and we are fortunate to have someone so uniquely qualified here at Holy Cross. I am eager to support Coach Green, our staff and student-athletes as we pursue the highest standards and expectations for Crusader Basketball.”

During the 2023-24 season, Green helped lead Holy Cross to their 13th Patriot League Tournament Championship and the 2023-24 Patriot League regular season title. Responsible for the guards, Bronagh Power-Cassidy was named the Patriot League Championship MVP, the Patriot League Championship All-Tournament Team, Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to the All-Patriot League first team. Cara McCormack also earned Patriot League Championship All-Tournament Team honors and was named to the All-Patriot League third team.

Green helped the Rams post an overall record of 51-28 in her previous three seasons as an assistant. Prior to her time at Fordham, she spent three years at Colgate as an assistant coach and one as a director of operations. Green graduated from Colgate University with a degree in neuroscience. She served as a two-time team captain for the Raiders, playing in 111 career games and making 91 starts. She reached the top-10 all-time with 271 assists and 93 three-pointers.
