Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Athletics announces the hiring of Heather Macy as the fourth Head Coach of the Sharks Women’s Basketball program. Macy, the former head coach at Barry University, brings over two decades of coaching experience to the NSU Women’s Basketball program.
“We are thrilled to welcome a coach with the experience, leadership, and proven success that Coach Macy brings to our program”, said Interim Director of Athletics, Ryan Romero. “Her ability to elevate teams, as she did this past season at Barry University, along with her impressive track record at every level of college basketball, makes her an outstanding fit for Nova Southeastern. I’m confident she will build on our tradition of excellence and lead our student-athletes to new heights.”
Macy’s Barry team led the SSC in scoring, rebounds, and steals in the 2024-2025 season. Macy remains the all-time winningest coach at East Carolina University, which competes in the NCAA’s Division 1. She has two decades of coaching experience as a head women’s basketball coach at DI, DII, and DIII institutions including Barry (Fla.), Greensboro College (N.C.), and East Carolina (N.C.), Francis Marion (S.C.), and Pfeiffer (N.C.) universities. During her time leading the Buccaneers, Macy led a 10-win improvement from the 2023-24 season to the 2024- 25 season, where she guided Barry to 19 wins and a berth to the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
“Coach Macy’s commitment to excellence will complement an already strong Sharks women’s basketball program, that has consistently brought out the best in player and coaching talent,” said NSU President and CEO Harry K. Moon.
NSU Women’s Basketball finished the 2024-25 season with a 27-7 record, advancing to the Sunshine State Conference tournament finals and the NCAA South Region Championship game. In the last 13 seasons, the Sharks have amassed 274 victories, advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight four times, won the SSC regular season title four times (2012-13, 2014-15, 2015- 16, 2023-24) and two SSC tournament championships (2013-14, 2014-15).
“It’s an honor to be a part of Nova Southeastern Athletics and lead the Sharks Women’s Basketball program,” stated Macy. “NSU Women’s Basketball has a tradition of success, and I look forward to working alongside the many talented coaches and student-athletes.”
Macy takes over the Sharks Women’s Basketball program following the departure of LeAnn Freeland-Curry, who was recently named the head women’s basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University.
