Luanne Axelson Retires as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Williston State

Williston State Women’s Basketball Coach Luanne Axelson has announces her retirement from the Tetons today. Axelson released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that I announce my retirement from Williston State basketball. I have put my heart and soul into this program for the past four years but at present I need to make my family my highest priority.

While I have been fortunate enough to experience considerable success as a coach, it is the memories of the players I have worked with that will forever stay in my mind. Coaches are only as good as the players they recruit, and I have been blessed to work with some great athletes and more importantly great young people. I only hope that I have had a small percentage of the impact on their lives that they have had on mine.”

Coach Axelson was able to hit the ground running and accomplished much success in year 1. Her 2012-2013 team reached that National Tournament and advanced to the Sweet-16. En route to that appearance, the Tetons win the Conference Championship, Region and District Championship, the National Tournament finish was the best since 1984. Her efforts got her named as the Conference, Region, and District Coach of the Year.

Throughout her career, she was able to build strong teams. Accolades include 9 All-Conference Players, 6 All-region players, and 2 All-Americans.  Off the court, the Tetons were just as good, finished as All-Academic Team for 3-years (this year all-academic team will be announced in June). Her 2014-2015 Team was ranked 2nd in the country in overall GPA.

Axelson also had this to say: “I can’t thank Williston State administration, entire coaching staffs, this great community and my players enough. It was a very rewarding ride and I am extremely proud to have been a part of it.”

Williston State will begin the hiring process in the coming days.
