Following 33 years of exceptional dedication to Albany State University (ASU), President Marion Ross Fedrick has requested Coach Robert Skinner to transition into a pivotal role focusing on university-wide wellness initiatives, an opportunity Coach Skinner has graciously accepted. In addition to this, Coach Skinner will also serve as the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities, Operations, and Community Engagement, furthering his profound impact on the university community.
“Coach Skinner’s impact on Albany State University cannot be overstated,” said ASU President Dr. Marion Ross Fedrick. “His passion for the success of our student-athletes and his dedication to the university’s mission have been evident throughout his career. We are grateful for his service and look forward to his continued contributions in his new role.”
Throughout his tenure at ASU, Coach Skinner has left an indelible mark on the athletic program, coaching volleyball, softball, and basketball, and leading teams to multiple SIAC Championships and NCAA post-season appearances. His impact on the university extends far beyond the basketball court, and his transition into administration will allow him to continue making a difference in a larger capacity.
“Upon my hire, Coach Skinner expressed his desire to transition into administration, and I fully support his decision,” said Dr. Kristene Kelly, Director of Athletics. “Coach Skinner truly bleeds blue and gold, and I am excited to see the expanded impact he will have on our campus community.
Coach Skinner’s impressive coaching career spans 44 years, including 33 years at ASU. He has led teams to a total of 21 SIAC Championships in basketball (3), volleyball (10), and softball (8). His coaching achievements include 612 basketball wins (Paine and ASU), 445 volleyball wins (1991-2018), and 351 softball wins (2002-2016), totaling 1,408 wins overall.
“Though I’m transitioning roles, I’m not stepping away; I’m stepping up to support the holistic well-being of our campus community. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m eager to continue my legacy by supporting the next basketball coach, just as I’ve done with volleyball and softball,” said Coach Robert Skinner.
Coach Skinner’s transition into administration marks a new chapter in his remarkable career, and his legacy at Albany State University will continue to inspire future generations of student-athletes.
