Kelsey Letourneau ’13, the assistant women’s basketball coach at Gustavus Adolphus, has been promoted to associate head coach of the team.
“We’re really excited to give ‘Flo’ this opportunity,” said Head Coach Laurie Kelly, now in her 13th season leading the women’s basketball program. “It’s so well-deserved. Flo is a Gustie; she bleeds Black & Gold. She has been committed to this program since the day she showed up, and has been a key part of how our program has elevated.
“Her attention to detail, ability to evaluate the game, and find talent has been so integral to the success of our team,” continued Kelly. “She is a great counterpart to me and my coaching style, and I think we have a great partnership. We are very fortunate to have her here at Gustavus, and I hope she continues to be a part of our program for a long time.”
Following her graduation in 2013, Letourneau got her master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences at Ithaca College in New York. While at Ithaca, she served as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team for two years. Letourneau then served as an assistant at Cornell University and Franklin & Marshall College before returning to Gustavus in 2018.
Since then, Letourneau has helped coach the Gusties to five top-five MIAC finishes, including the program’s first-ever outright MIAC regular season championship, and the team’s only three MIAC playoff championships.
Last season, the 2023-24 squad wrote themselves into the women’s basketball record books 20 times, setting single season records for MIAC winning percentage (.950), team field goal percentage (47.9%), and team assists (502). The team posted its highest ever national ranking (No. 4) and was the first in MIAC history to have all five starters selected as All-Conference. Letourneau has coached 10 All-Conference individuals, as well as a pair of Honorable Mention All-Americans in Syd Hauger (5th, Springfield) and Anna Sanders ’23.
“I am beyond grateful for this new opportunity with this amazing program,” Letourneau said. “Gustavus is such a special place to me. I’m excited to continue contributing to a program that has given me so much, both as a student-athlete and now a coach. I couldn’t be happier to work alongside Coach Kelly and I look forward to being able to mentor and support our athletes in new and meaningful ways. Go Gusties!”
A 2013 Gustavus graduate, Kelsey Florian Letourneau was a key contributor for the Gustie women’s basketball team from 2009-13, appearing in 97 career games and starting 50, with the team making the MIAC playoffs all four years. Letourneau posted her best numbers in her senior season, averaging 11.6 points per game, leading the team in assists (76), free throw percentage (.762), and assist-turnover ratio (1.29). Letourneau was named the MIAC’s 2012 Sixth Player of the Year and 2013 Honorable Mention All-MIAC.
The women’s basketball team kicks off its 2024-25 regular season on Nov. 9 against UW-La Crosse as a part of the UW-Eau Claire Tip-Off Tournament.
