Lehigh Women’s Basketball Staff Update

New additions were made to the Lehigh women’s basketball program, as head coach Sue Troyan has officially announced two hires to the coaching staff on Friday.

Previously the team’s Director of Basketball Operations, former Mountain Hawk Bernadette Devaney has received a promotion and will serve as an assistant coach on Troyan’s staff for the 2019-20 season.

Before her stint and Director of Ops for the 2018-19 season, Devaney had a very productive four year career as a Lehigh shooting guard.

She appeared in 111 games over four seasons as a member of the Mountain Hawks from 2014-2018, averaging 4.5 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. As a senior in 2017-18, she averaged career-highs of 6.5 points, 1.3 assists, and 1.1 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game. She ranked second on the team by shooting 37.8 percent from three-point range and 82.4 percent from the free throw line.

Devaney graduated from Lehigh with a Bachelor’s degree in management in May 2018 and is currently working on attaining her Master’s degree in sociology, targeting a May 2020 graduation date.

“We are very excited to elevate Bernie into our assistant position,” said Troyan. “She has demonstrated tremendous growth and loyalty over the past year and is well prepared for this next step in her coaching journey. She brings a strong understanding of our program and the people associated within it; a great understanding for the Lehigh experience and the opportunities for learning and growth that it represents for our current and future Mountain Hawks; as well as a great passion for and understanding of the game.”

Replacing Devaney as Director of Basketball Operations is 2019 Patriot League Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Cecily Carl.

Carl, a standout forward at American, comes to Lehigh after four very successful years in our nation’s capital. She averaged a career-best 15.8 points per game, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 33 games in 2018-19 en route to being named Player of the Year in the Patriot League. In four years, Carl is a three-time All-League selection, garnering Third Team honors in 2017, Second Team in 2018 and First Team in 2019.

In 2018, Carl helped American win its second Patriot League Championship and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Patriot League tournament.

Carl graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2018 and received her Master’s degree in sports analytics and management from American in 2019.

“We’re excited to have Cecily join our program as Director of Basketball Operations,” Troyan said.  “In Cecily, we are getting a player who understands what it takes to succeed at the highest levels; a player who has been well prepared with strong coaching and mentorship from her AU staff; and a player who will bring a high level of credibility given her personal success within our league.”

The promotion of Devaney and addition of Carl officially completes Troyan’s coaching staff for the 2019-20 season, as they join Troyan, associate head coach Glenn Rigney and associate head coach Addie Micir.
