Lafayette adds Gaba as Women’s Basketball Coach

Joe Gaba has joined the Lafayette women’s basketball program as an assistant coach, solidifying head coach Ben O’Brien’s staff.

“We are excited to welcome Joe to the Lafayette women’s basketball family. He has established himself as one of the most respected and successful coaches in New Jersey, building a championship program and a culture of excellence at Chatham,” O’Brien said. “We are thrilled to add someone with his character and experience to our staff and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our players and program.”

During his 29 years at Chatham High School in New Jersey, Gaba led the program to a record of 576-218 and the school’s first NJSIAA sectional title and Morris County championship. Gaba guided his teams to eight top-20 New Jersey rankings and the program’s first 20-win and 30-win seasons. Chatham won 11 conference championships and nine NJSIAA championships during his tenure. Gaba was a six-time Morris County Coach of the Year, mentoring 10 1,000-point scorers, 10 all-state players and more than 43 student-athletes who went on to play at the NCAA level.

In 2022, Gaba became an AAU high school program director and Power 24 head coach for the United 15U, 16U and 17U AAU girls basketball teams in New Jersey. There, he assisted player recruitment and team development while also connecting players with college coaches and scouts.

Gaba is a 1992 graduate of Mount St. Mary’s,  where he earned his bachelor of science degree in biology. He later completed his master’s degree in biology at Fairleigh Dickinson.

Gaba joins Hannah Angelini, Tessa Brugler and Jessica George as assistants for O’Brien ahead of the 2026-27 season.
