King University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Josh Thompson announced the resignation of assistant coach Shelly Strang this week. Strang spent the last seven season as Thompson’s assistant for the Tornado women’s basketball program.
Strang came with Thompson to King and was integral in the resurgence of the women’s basketball program. In their first year on campus, the Tornado won five games but improved that mark to win 15 in 2012-13 and qualified for the Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Championship for the first time.
“I’m very thankful for Shelly’s seven years here at King,” Thompson said. “She was a huge part of the success that we were able to have. Although I am sad to see her go I am very happy for her and the opportunity that God has provided for her and her family. She will be missed greatly.”
Since 2012-13, King has been a mainstay in the Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Championship, hosting their first conference tournament game in 2013-14. That game also turned out as their first victory in the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
Each of the last three years, King has reached the championship game, winning their first title in 2016-17, which clinched their first NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship berth. The Tornado defeated home-standing and top seed Limestone College 78-77. That season, King fell to second-seeded Wingate University in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament.
In 2014-15, King posted their first 20-win season since 2007-08 and their first since becoming NCAA Division II members. The 2016-17 season saw the Tornado break that mark with 25 victories, three short of the school record 28 wins.
Over the last seven years, King has had seven players earn All-Conference Carolinas accolades, one Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year and one Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Tornado have also had 31 players earn academic all-conference accolades.
