Kaneshiki Returns to Washington College Staff

Steve Kaneshiki, who previously served as interim head women’s basketball coach at Washington College, has returned to the school for his third stint on the team’s coaching staff. Kaneshiki spent the past three seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Morrisville State, leading the Mustangs to their best-ever season and first conference championship game appearance.

Kaneshiki took over a young team at Morrisville State and had a quick impact on the program. The Mustangs went 1-24 his first season and were a program-best 20-8 just two years later, reaching the championship game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). He coached the team’s first NEAC Rookie of the Year and first All-NEAC first-team selection.

Kaneshiki’s first stint on the Shorewomen’s coaching staff was as an assistant during the 2005-06 season. After a year as an assistant at Rutgers-Camden, he returned to Chestertown as an assistant coach during the summer of 2007, but was elevated to interim head coach in October of that year. During the 2007-08 season, he coached the Shorewomen’s first All-Conference first-team selection, Elise Conway ’08.

Prior to his first arrival in Chestertown, Kaneshiki spent three years as head women’s basketball coach at Cumberland County College in New Jersey, leading the Dukes to their first-ever back-to-back NJCAA Region XIX Semifinal appearances. After his time as the Shorewomen’s interim head coach, he returned to Cumberland for three more seasons as head coach, this time guiding the team to its first-ever back-to-back winning seasons and its first-ever national ranking. He went on to spend a season as assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at The College at Brockport before landing the head coaching job at Morrisville.

Throughout his coaching career, Kaneshiki has served in various other roles in his athletic departments. He was a key member of the game management staff in his previous time at Washington College, an Athletic Assistant at Cumberland, and both a Sports Information Assistant and Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor at Morrisville.

Kaneshiki attended Elon University, where he received a B.S. in Sport/Leisure Management with a minor in Business in 1999.
