Description:

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by coaching and administering the Women’s Basketball program. The Head Coach – Women’s Basketball is responsible for all aspects of the management of the program.  This position also works with Food Services to coordinate meals for all teams throughout the academic year.

This is a 43 weeks per year/ .833 FTE position.

Essential Functions

  1. Organizes and implements practice plans and game management systems.
  2. Assists in scheduling league and non-league contests and scrimmages.
  3. Makes all team related travel and lodging arrangements.  Ensures proper conduct of team members at all times while representing Norwich during team travel.
  4. Assists the equipment manager with the selection and purchase of equipment, uniforms and apparel. Follows guidelines and requirements regarding authorized use of university and department logos and mark, along with equipment safety requirements.
  5. Communicates with athletic training staff regarding student-athlete injuries. Follows direction provided by athletic trainers regarding athletes’ ability to practice or compete, and supports rehab and return to play activities and timelines.
  6. Demonstrates proper sideline decorum, models good sportsmanship, and maintains positive relationships with officials/referees, assignors.
  7. Establishes and maintains an atmosphere where academics are prioritized. Monitors academic progress of student athletes, and communicates as needed with professors and academic support personnel.
  8. Completes necessary administrative forms, including, but not limited to: DS travel forms, end of season reports, preseason and in-season rosters, travel expense reports, and evaluations of assistant coaches.
  9. Manages program budget – stays within budget limits, meets deadlines for completion of financial forms, and communicates with office manager and Director of Athletics as needed.
  10. Organizes and administers fundraising activities in conjunction with the Director of the Maroon and Gold Athletic Association.
  11. Recruits qualified student athletes (normally a minimum of one quarter of the roster each year). Follows institutional and departmental recruiting procedures, including required use of the Slate recruiting database, in coordination with Admissions.
  12. Recognizes the importance of annual retention of quality student-athletes, and fosters an atmosphere within the program that supports university retention objectives.
  13. Hires, supervises, mentors, and evaluates assistant coaches.
  14. Supervises student workers (work study).
  15. Attends required conference meetings.
  16. Attends university open houses.
  17. Develops and nurtures alumni and community relations.
  18. Maintains thorough and current knowledge and understanding of all NCAA and conference rules and regulations.
  19. Performs additional department administrative and/or game management responsibilities as assigned by Director of Athletics.
  20. Serves as the Athletic Department Meal Coordinator
    1. Responsible for game day team meal requests, including pre-game meals and boxed meals for team travel.
    2. Communicates with head coaches about weekly meal orders and meal pick up times.
    3. Acts as a liaison between the Athletic Department and Dining Services, including providing feedback from coaches and athletes about quality of food options.

  5. Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  6. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  7. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  8. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
