Description:
Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Club Sports, the Head Women’s Basketball Coach is responsible for meeting the goals of guiding and building an elite-level NCAA Division II program. This requires the promotion of academic achievement and character of the student-athlete, fans, and the overall College community. The Head Women’s Basketball Coach is responsible for the hiring and supervision of one full-time assistant coach and one graduate assistant coach. A focus on recruitment and retention of student-athletes, the implementation of a full developmental team program, game knowledge, on-court practice plans, individual player development, generation of net tuition revenue, direction of summer basketball camps, and meticulous budget management are essential for this position. The Head Women’s Basketball Coach must abide by the NCAA, Conference Carolinas, and Title IX regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the overall management of the Women’s Basketball program, establishing and adhering to policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines in compliance with the policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines of all College, NCAA, State, and Federal Laws.
  • Recruit elite-level prospective student-athletes that will excel within the College framework and make successful progress toward graduation.
  • Monitor academic progress and the retention of students affiliated with the Women’s Basketball program, implementing action plans in collaboration with the Faculty Athletic Representative and Burton Center for Student Success.
  • Formulate an effective philosophy to promote the educational welfare and sportsmanship of the student-athlete in alignment with the College’s mission.
  • Assume responsibility for sportsmanship, conduct, and academic progress of all students and staff affiliated with the Women’s Basketball program.
  • Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and Conference Carolinas regulations.
  • Oversee communication with recruits, evaluations off campus, official visits, and try-outs.
  • Conduct training, development, and supervision for team members.
  • Introduce basketball techniques and skills through practice sessions and demonstration.
  • Improve level of play and offer opportunities for success as an athlete.
  • Evaluate team members, scout opponents, and address overall team needs.
  • Manage all operational, fiscal, and administrative activities for the Women’s Basketball program.
  • Coordinate and conduct individual workout programs, including conditioning, strength training, and multiple basketball skill sets.
  • Achieve roster goals through extensive player evaluation and recruitment.
  • Meet net tuition revenue targets by properly awarding athletic scholarships.
  • Establish and oversee a fully, competitive developmental program.
  • Promote the athletic program and women’s basketball through attending community events, public speaking, fundraising, revenue generation, and marketing.
  • Direct multiple weeks of summer basketball camp
  • Comply with NCAA, conference, and Lees-McRae College regulations and policies.
  • Participate in institutional professional development and training.
  • Display behavior consistent with professional ethics and the Lees-McRae faculty and staff handbook.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Club Sports.

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct supervision of one full-time assistant coach and one graduate assistant coach, as well as any student assistants or managers.

Work Environment

Normal office environment in addition to non-traditional environment that includes gymnasiums, weight room, and locker room. Coach can be outside for team activities and extra skill sessions.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, 12-month position. A flexible work schedule that will include days, evenings, and weekends is required. Work hours vary from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, with frequent weekend and evening hours as needed.

Travel

Extensive travel is typically required for this position to recruit prospective student-athletes and attend away competitions. Occasional travel for conferences, training, or obtaining certifications/licensures may be required.

Required Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three-five years of coaching at the college level or extensive high school coaching experience.
  • Experience with budget development and management.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable with a student-centered approach and strong customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree.
  • NCAA Division II coaching background.
  • Certifications: CPR, AED, and First Aid.
