The Head Women’s Basketball Coach reports to the Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and requires an understanding of and commitment to the values of The Evergreen State College and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). This position is responsible for building and sustaining a quality, competitive intercollegiate women’s basketball program, which focuses on the development of student-athletes and supports the mission of the College. The position plans and conducts all activities of the intercollegiate basketball program, including recruiting, scheduling, fundraising, alumni relations, and student-athlete mentoring (academic, physical, emotional, and social components). The Head Coach is expected to contribute to the overall success of Recreation & Athletics and the Student Affairs Division.
Essential Functions
• Coach the intercollegiate team during the basketball season, which begins in late September and runs through March.
• Plan and implement training for practices at the college’s recreational facilities during pre-season, the competitive season, and in the off-season.
• Recruit prospective student-athletes on an ongoing, year-round basis. Take an active part in determining the prospective student-athletes eligibility according to Cascade Collegiate Conference and NAIA rules.
• Ensure the safety of student-athletes while practicing and playing, as well as in travel situations.
• Schedule the intercollegiate basketball competition season in conjunction with the Director of Recreation & Athletics and Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
• Schedule the court for practice and games prior to the season in conjunction with Operations Coordinator, and in collaboration with other coaches and staff. Inform all departmental administrators and support personnel of changes in team schedules (especially the Certified Athletic Trainer), including games, practices, and meetings that require classroom space.
• Upload basketball schedule to supervisor of officials in Stripezone online system.
• Supervise Women’s Basketball Assistant Coaches
• Coordinate with Certified Athletic Trainer regarding proactive training and reactive treatment.
• Carry out the duties of the position within NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference rules, regulations, and guidelines.
• Accompany and supervise team on all away trips.
• Encourage academic achievement, community service, good conduct, and sportsmanship on the part of each team member.
• Develop and implement fund raising efforts in coordination with the Associate Director and other staff.
• Attend all relevant meetings of Cascade Collegiate Conference and department staff meetings.
• Coordinate efforts to support the ongoing academic and future success of each student-athlete with academic and career advisors and faculty.
• Ensure the development of the whole student by contributing to and supporting the learning outcomes of student -athletes.
• Work with the Sports Information Director to provide vital information on all team members and coaches, as well as in the production of all printed and online materials related to the basketball program.
• Work with Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Athletic Director to coordinate and staff events that bring support to the College such as Hall of Fame, booster club, and other community events; provide outreach and information dissemination as needed.
• Responsible for planning, scheduling, and implementing the activities for an annual week-long basketball camp.
• Coach players during annual alumni basketball games and foster relationships between players and alumni.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
• In-depth knowledge of the sport of intercollegiate basketball, including rules, regulations, and strategies.
• Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
• Ability to comprehend and follow NAIA and Cascade Conference rules, regulations, and guidelines.
• Ability to effectively recruit student-athletes capable of both helping Evergreen be successful on the court and benefiting from the academic experiences provided by the College.
• Cultural awareness, approachability, and effectiveness in working with all students, staff and faculty across social, racial, ethnic, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, religious, and political differences.
• Knowledge of student development theory to the degree that it has a positive impact on student -athletes, Recreation & Athletics, and Student Affairs.
• Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality of student and all other information and records of a confidential nature.
• Ability to supervise and train others.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective records and reporting system within the department and the College
• Available to work nights and weekends according to the varying needs of all components of the position.
• Willing and able to travel extensively for games and student-athlete recruitment.
• Ability to stress the importance of the total student-athlete experience on a college campus.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, and motivational skills.
