The University of Dubuque’s Nelson Edmonds, Vice President of Student Engagement and Intercollegiate Athletics, announced Madeline (Staples) Jansen as the Spartans women’s basketball head coach. Jansen joins UD after serving as an assistant coach for the UW-Oshkosh Titans over the past four seasons where they have an overall record of 93-27, including two WIAC regular season conference championships, four consecutive NCAA DIII Tournament appearances, and reaching the NCAA DIII Final Four in 2025.
“We are excited to welcome Madeline and her family to our UD community,” commented Edmonds. “Her success and connections as a player and coach will serve our basketball program well as we continue to grow and compete regionally and nationally. Jansen’s traits as a mentor will serve our communities as we strive to live and model the mission of the University of Dubuque.”
Jansen is the 14th women’s basketball coach in school history and will begin her duties on Monday, June 16 and is eager to get going as the newest head coach of the University of Dubuque women’s basketball team.

This program will be built for our student-athletes grounded in discipline, integrity, and pride — a culture our players, alumni, and the entire UD community can be proud of.”
Jansen developed and mentored 11 All-WIAC honorees, one WIAC Newcomer of the Year, and two first team All-Americans. In the 2019 season, she was a part of the WBCA Coaching Staff of the Year after finishing the season 26-4. Prior to UW-Oshkosh, Jansen was an assistant women’s basketball coach for Wisconsin GLO, a professional women’s basketball team featuring elite collegiate graduates, former WNBA players, and international professionals. In this league, Jansen helped lead the team to a Global Women’s Basketball Association (GBWA) championship in 2021 where she contributed to player development, in-game strategy, and opponent scouting at the professional level.
She also spent two seasons (2019-2021) at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Mo. (former NCAA DII, GLV Conference) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in the Midwest region. She began her coaching career as the UW-Oshkosh women’s basketball graduate assistant for one year and an AAU basketball coach in Madison, Wis. for well over seven years.
During her four-year collegiate career at UW-Oshkosh, she was a four-year letter winner and two-year team captain for a nationally ranked NCAA Division III program. Staples graduated with a degree in psychology before getting her masters degree in Educational Leadership & Policy from UW-Oshkosh.
She resides in Dubuque with her husband Taylor and their triplet daughters: Amelia, Charlee,and Emerson and dog Carver.
