Jacksonville hires assistant

acksonville University has announced Darnell Haney has been added to the women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Haney comes to JU after having been the Jones High School (Orlando, Fla.) women’s basketball head coach since 2010.

“Darnell is a man that displays class, great work ethic, and energy,” said JU women’s basketball head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. “I know the university, team, and community will appreciate his presence immediately. I look forward to watching him excel here at JU on and off the floor.”

While at Jones High School, Haney helped turn around a program that had won just six games prior to him arriving to compiling 60 wins during a 3 year tenure. He guided the Lady Tigers to District and Regional titles as well as a State Final Four appearance in 2012. For his efforts, Haney was named three-time FACA Coach of the Year.

“I am extremely honored and excited about joining Coach McCuin’s staff here at JU,” said Haney. “Her vision and her approach to developing an elite program is one that I am proud to be a part of. As a coach you are blessed with a handful of truly special situations. This program and this situation are special and I am ready to help JU Women’s Basketball show how special we really are.”

Haney is a graduate Florida A&M University received his Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Nova Southeastern University in 2009. He and his wife Aaliyah have two children, Imani 7 and Caleb 2.
