Bowling Green State University women’s basketball head coach Jennifer Roos has announced the addition of Jessie Ivey to her staff. Ivey, who was recently named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year, joins the Falcons after spending the last four seasons at the University of West Florida.
“Jessie has been recognized by her peers at the national level as a coach,” said Roos. “She is a consummate learner and is a true servant leader in the profession. She has gained valuable experience in every facet of the game under Head Coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. Jessie will be a great addition to our program and University.”
Ivey, a native of Jay, Fla., spent four seasons at UWF, her alma mater, under Head Coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. After three years as an assistant coach, she was promoted to recruiting coordinator in May of 2015.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Bowling Green family,” said Ivey. “I am elated to be working with high character student-athletes, while helping mentor them into becoming the best players and people they can be. Bowling Green is a one-of-a-kind place with a great tradition and I cannot thank Coach Roos enough for believing in me and giving me a chance to help build a successful program on and off the court. I believe in BG and feel so blessed to call myself a Falcon.”
The Argos went 62-51 over the last four years, winning the 2014 Gulf South Conference championship and making two NCAA Tournament appearances during that time. The Argos went 17-10 last season after winning a combined 39 games over the previous two seasons. After going 6-21 in 2012-13 – Yelton’s first season as head coach and Ivey’s first season as an assistant – UWF more than tripled that win total in ’13-14, going 19-11, winning the GSC Tournament championship for the first time in program history and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The 2014-15 Argos finished with a 20-9 mark and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regional semifinals.
In late March of 2016, Ivey was the inaugural winner of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Assistant Coach of the Year. That award is presented to the recipient who has demonstrated commitment to the program, to their student-athletes and head coach, their impact coaching on the court, mentorship and impact on other coaches, as well as their professional manner and attitude.
Ivey was also named to the WBCA’s inaugural Thirty Under 30 honoree list. She participated in the WBCA’s 2015 Center for Coaching Excellence in Atlanta., Ga., and also participated in the Assistant Coaches Leadership Workshop in Quantico, Va.
Ivey played for the Argos from 2005-10, finishing her career with 381 points, 81 three-pointers, 100 assists and 51 steals over 96 games. She started all 28 games as a senior, averaging 5.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 23.0 minutes per game. For her career, she shot 30.4 percent from three-point land and 82.5% from the free-throw line.
Following the completion of her collegiate playing career, Ivey joined the Argonauts’ staff as a graduate assistant, serving in that role for two years before being promoted to assistant coach.
A graduate of Jay High School, she ranks third in school history with 1,616 career points.
Ivey graduated from UWF in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science and a minor in sports psychology. She earned a Master of Science degree in exercise science from UWF in 2012.
Ivey is one of two new coaches on the BGSU staff. Roos announced the hiring of Nick Moore on Tuesday (June 28).
“I’m excited about the staff we have put together for the 2016-17 season and beyond,” said the head coach. “Not only will Nick and Jessie make a significant impact on our program, they will have a strong connection with and representation within our local community.”
