INTERIM TAG REMOVED: McGlothan named Women’s Basketball Head Coach at Eastern Illinois

Eastern Illinois Athletic Director Tom Michael has removed the interim tag from women’s basketball head coach Marqus McGlothan and named him the head coach for the Panthers program with a multi-year contract (pending EIU Board of Trustees approval in April).

McGlothan led the Panthers to an 18-12 record including a 15-5 record in the OVC.  Along the way EIU led the conference in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense with both numbers landing in the school’s single season top ten.   He coached the OVC Player of the Year Macy McGlone and OVC Defender of the Year Kiyley Flowers to individual conference honors.

“”Statistically speaking I’m not supposed to be in this position, and I hope my story can inspire others to stay consistent in the pursuit of their goals. Without God none of this would be possible. Once I allowed him to guide my steps my life has been significantly better!  I appreciate Jay (University President Dr. Jay Gatrell)  and Tom (Michael) giving me an opportunity when no one else would; I will forever be grateful for them and EIU,” said McGlothan.  “The Charleston/Mattoon community has been amazing to me and my family. We appreciate the love, the support, and the respect the community has shown us since we’ve been here. I have so much appreciation for my players and staff during my term as interim Head Coach and that team will always have a special place in my heart. We had a solid year this past season, but I’m excited about the opportunity to continue to build and win at Eastern. My goal is to bring a championship to Eastern Illinois; I feel our players, university, and community deserve that! Go Panthers, Bleed Blue!”

“I am excited to able to hire Marqus and remove the interim tag from his title,” said Michael.  “In his three years here in Charleston, he and his family have ingratiated themselves as part of the community not only through their involvement with the basketball team on the court but away from it as well.  When we named him the interim head coach last Spring, I felt confident that he could have success and continue to build on the foundation that had been laid over the previous couple of years.  He was a huge part of the recruiting and coaching effort of the current players on the team as an assistant for two years and I think that will only continue to grow now that he can put his own touches on the program.  I look forward to Marqus building this program into an OVC championship contender year in and year out.”

The 18 wins by McGlothan are the third most by an EIU women’s basketball head coach in program history.   He guided EIU to a 13-0 record at home in Groniger Arena marking just the second time in program history the Panthers have posted an undefeated season at home.  EIU opened the year with a 10-0 record in the OVC for the third best start in conference play in school history.  EIU’s 15 OVC wins are tied for the second most in school history as he led EIU to its sixth straight OVC Tournament appearance.

He becomes the tenth head coach in program history.  McGlothan served two years as an assistant coach in the EIU staff before being elevated to the interim head coaching position in the late Spring.  During his time with EIU he has coached three first team All-OVC players, two OVC Players of the Year and two OVC Defenders of the Year.   McGlothan is a 2015 graduate of St. Cloud State University.
