Benedictine University at Mesa has announced the appointment of Brian Hutchins as the University’s first-ever head women’s basketball coach.
“I am honored, humbled and blessed to be selected as the head women’s basketball coach at Benedictine University at Mesa,” Hutchins said. “I have always had aspirations to coach in college. Benedictine is a unique opportunity to build a program from the ground up. The Benedictine women’s basketball program will produce leaders and well-rounded individuals who strive for excellence.
“I believe Arizona has quality student-athletes that can immediately compete in the NAIA and the California Pacific Conference.”
Hutchins comes to BenU at Mesa from Campo Verde High School in Gilbert, Ariz., where he built the girls’ basketball program from scratch in 2009. He quickly made the team a contender in AIA Division II, qualifying for the state tournament the past three seasons, including reaching the Elite Eight.
Hutchins has also been an assistant coach at various high schools in the East Valley, including Mountain View, Apache Junction and Queen Creek, and has also coached at the club level with Arizona Premier Basketball Academy.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Brian Hutchins to the Mesa campus as our first-ever head women’s basketball coach,” Benedictine University at Mesa Director of Athletics Steve Schafer said. “I have known Brian now for about a year and had a chance to follow him at Campo Verde. I was very impressed with the way he went about his business. He coaches with integrity and cares about the student-athlete and their overall experience. Brian is a welcomed addition to the Redhawk athletic family.”
The Redhawks women’s basketball team will begin play in NAIA during the 2016-17 season.
