Texas A&M University – Texarkana has announced Blake Huber as its new Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Associate AD.
“Blake comes to TAMUT from Arkansas Tech where he served as an assistant coach under great leadership. The fact that he comes to us with a high pedigree of coaching, his father is a lifetime coach and his mother has spent her time in education, provides us with the satisfaction that all of his decision making will be done with the best interest of the student-athletes. Coach Huber has been part of successful programs at the Division I and Division II level and he will bring that formula of success to our Women’s Basketball Program.” – Athletic Director Michael Galvan
Huber joins TAMUT after serving two seasons as the assistant coach at Arkansas Tech University.
In the ’21-’22 season, the Golden Suns finished with a 17-14 record and a conference championship appearance. Huber oversaw the scouting, recruiting, and offensive schemes within the program.
During his first season, Huber helped the Golden Suns achieve an impressive 14-2 overall record and a 12-1 record in conference play that earned them the GAC East Conference Title and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Coach Huber joined the Golden Suns after a two-year stint at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). While at UTRGV, Huber helped guide the Vaqueros to only their fourth postseason appearance ever in 2018-19 as the team competed in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). That opportunity to play in the WBI came after UTRGV made their way to the WAC Championship Game, but ultimately fell to New Mexico State, 76-73 in double overtime.
Prior to his time at UTRGV, Huber spent one season at GAC-rival Henderson State University. That year, Huber helped guide the Reddies to a 21-9 overall record and a third-place regular season finish in the highly competitive GAC after posting a program-record 16 conference wins. The 21 wins also were the most wins for the program since 2005-06.
Henderson was Huber’s first as a full-time assistant coach, but he was not short on coaching experience; before that serving as a student-assistant at a pair of DII powerhouses, Pittsburg State University (2014-15 – 2016-17) and Drury University (2013-14).
While at Pitt State, Huber helped lead the Gorillas to an 81-19 overall record, NCAA Regional Tournament appearances in all three years highlighted by an Elite 8 appearance in 2015-16.
“First, I want to say thank you to Mr. Galvan and the search committee for making all this possible.
I want to thank every single player and coach that I’ve had the privilege to work with in giving me the opportunity to become the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Texas A&M – Texarkana.
This is an exciting chapter in Texas A&M – Texarkana women’s basketball and the future is very bright for this program. My staff and I relish the challenge of creating a regional and national contender and it is going to start and end with our players. We are going to love our players and push them every single day to be the best basketball player and person they can be.
I’m super excited to be an Eagle!”
