UMKC head women’s basketball coach Jacie Hoyt announced the addition of Kindred Wesemann as an assistant coach on Thursday.
“I am confident that Kindred’s success as a player, paired with her ability to connect with young women, will impact our player development and recruiting efforts tremendously,” commented Hoyt. “She was one of the most well-respected players in the country in her time playing for me at Kansas State, and she knows what it takes to build a successful culture both on and off of the court.
“As a standout player and team captain, she was fiery, passionate and one of the best leaders I have ever had the privilege to coach. I am thrilled for our players to have her as a role model.”
Wesemann begins her first season at UMKC after a successful four-year playing career at Kansas State. Her primary responsibilities on Hoyt’s coaching staff will include recruiting and player development with UMKC’s guards. Wesemann will also serve as the program’s liaison for camps, clinics and community service events.
“The opportunity to come back home to Kansas City and continue building my relationship with Jacie is a dream come true,” shared Wesemann. “I know what it takes to turn a program around and I am very excited to help build a championship mentality within the UMKC women’s basketball program.”
Wesemann’s senior season was perhaps her most memorable, as the Pleasant Hills, Mo., native turned in career numbers across the board. She earned first-team All-Big 12 laurels for the first time in her career after averaging a career-high 13.9 points per game (474 points) and sinking a career-high 90 3-point field goals on 256 attempts. The 90 made 3-point field goals ranks sixth in Kansas State program history for a single season and is the third-most converted by a senior.
Under the direction of the Kansas State coaching staff that included Hoyt, Wesemann helped her team reach the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons, advancing to the second round each time.
Wesemann put on a Kansas State jersey for the final time at the 29th Annual State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, as a part of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four festivities in March. She won the Marines Women’s 3-Point Contest before squaring off with the winner on the men’s side in the Shoe Carnival Battle of the Champions to determine the overall winner. In a tiebreaker with Iowa’s Peter Jok, Wesemann was declared the champion to sweep the 3-point contests.
For her career at Kansas State, Wesemann finished in the top-10 in multiple statistical categories, including assists (329), 3-point field goals made (264), 3-point field goals attempted (764), free throw percentage (.819) and steals (193).
Wesemann graduated in May with her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and was a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection. She was also named the 2016 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll six times.
