HOT: Extension for Giorgis at Marist

Marist Director of Athletics Tim Murray announced that head women’s basketball coach Brian Giorgis has signed a contract extension through the 2020-21 season.

Giorgis is currently in his 11th season as head coach of the Red Foxes. He has compiled a record of 255-77 (.768), and entered this season with the fourth-highest winning percentage among active Division I head coaches. Under his leadership, the Red Foxes have won the last nine Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season championships and reached eight NCAA Tournaments, which include berths each of the last seven seasons.

Giorgis has led Marist to five NCAA Tournament victories, with four coming as the lower-seeded team. The Red Foxes became the first team in MAAC history to reach the tournament’s Sweet Sixteen in 2007. Marist has won a first-round NCAA game in four of the last six seasons.

Marist has nine consecutive 20-win seasons under Giorgis’ leadership, and the Red Foxes enjoyed 30-win campaigns in 2007-08 (32-3) and 2010-11 (31-3). In the 2010-11 season, Marist achieved its highest ranking in school history, a 17th-place position in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll in March.

Giorgis has been named MAAC Coach of the Year six times, and has had six players honored as MAAC Player of the Year.

Giorgis was hired at Marist on May 15, 2002, after he had compiled a record of 451-44 and won nine state championships in 19 years as head girls’ basketball coach at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. He is the only coach in New York scholastic sports history to bring teams in four different sports to the state Final Four, as he also led the school’s baseball, softball and volleyball teams there. In 2010, Giorgis was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.
