Emily Holombek has been named interim women’s head basketball coach at East Central University it was announced by ECU Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams.
No stranger to the ECU athletic department, Holombek was named the women’s basketball assistant coach starting in the 2012-13 season. During her time as the assistant, she helped the Lady Tigers improve from 8-19 in 2011-12 to a record of 19-9 in 2012-13.
Holombek has been either a graduate assistant coach or player for the Lady Tigers since the 2008-09 season.
Prior to taking over her current duties, she spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons as a graduate assistant for both the volleyball and women’s basketball teams at ECU.
The Red Oak, Texas, native started her Tiger career as a member of the volleyball team from 2008 to 2010. Holombek left ECU as the career leader in attack percentage, hitting .267 (588 kills-194 errors-1478 total attempts) in her two-year career. Despite playing just two seasons, she also ranks in the top 10 in kills (fourth at 588), total attempts (seventh at 1478), service aces (fifth at 68), block assists (fifth at 99), block solos (second at 33), total blocks (third at132) and digs (10th at 305). She claimed honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference accolades as a senior.
After volleyball, Holombek joined the Tiger women’s basketball team for the last 11 games of the 2009-10 season and the entire 2010-11 campaign. In her final year on the basketball team, she averaged 5.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game, while adding 10 blocks.
Holombek transferred to ECU from Navarro Junior College (Texas) where she was a member of the volleyball squad (2006-07).
Holombek earned her bachelor of science in business administration in 2011 and a master in secondary education – sports administration in 2012 from ECU.
Holombek takes over the head coaching duties from Kent Franz, who has been suspended from coaching and teaching responsibilities. Franz is being reassigned to other duties.
The Lady Tigers will open the 2013-14 season against Southwest Christian, Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Kerr Activities Center.
