Hoffman named Women’s Basketball Head Coach at D2 Saint Mary’s (IN)

Saint Mary’s Women’s Basketball and the Department of Athletics announced that Robert Hoffman has been named as the next Head Basketball Coach.

Hoffman comes to Saint Mary’s from fellow Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Trine University where he has been a member of the Women’s Basketball coaching staff since 2017. Hoffman served as the Associate Head Coach since 2021 and was an Assistant coach prior. Last season, Hoffman helped lead the Thunder to a 22-8 (12-4 MIAA) record including three wins over top-ten ranked teams, a conference championship, and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Since his return to the program, the Thunder captured four MIAA Regular Season Championships, a MIAA Tournament Championship, made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals three times and made the NCAA National Championship Semifinals in 2021-22.

A graduate of Trine, Hoffman served as a Student Assistant from 2013-16 where he played a major role in turning the program around, including a trip to the MIAA finals and two All-MIAA players. He then spent the 2016-17 season as a Graduate Assistant with the Florida State University Men’s Basketball program where he helped take the team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and had three players drafted to the NBA. Hoffman also earned his Master of Science degree in Sport Management from Florida State.

“I want to thank Saint Mary’s College, Athletic Director Julie Schroeder-Biek, and the entire search committee for this great opportunity. I am excited to represent this great academic institution and lead this basketball program.” Hoffman said “I can’t wait to share my knowledge, passion, and competitive spirit to these student-athletes. Our commitment to academic success, each other, and our commitment on the floor will be the necessary building blocks of a great team culture.”

Hoffman takes over a program that finished last season with a 5-20 (2-14 MIAA) record and missed the conference tournament.
