San Diego State Head women’s basketball coach Stacie Terry-Hutson has announced the hiring of Gregg Gottlieb as an assistant coach. Gottlieb, who was most recently an assistant for the Grand Canyon women’s program, comes to SDSU with nearly 30 years of college coaching experience, including an eight-year stint as an Aztec men’s assistant under the legendary Steve Fisher.
“Gregg will be a great addition to our staff,” Terry Hutson said. “He has decades of college experience on the West Coast and is very familiar with San Diego State and the Mountain West. He has a knack for cultivating relationships and has proven he can help build and sustain success at every program he has worked with.”
Since 1994, Gottlieb has been an assistant coach with stops at Grand Canyon (2020-23), Oregon State (2014-20), California (2008-14), San Diego State (1999-07), Sacramento State (1997-99) and Cal Poly (1995-97). Aside from his recent stint at Grand Canyon, all his prior coaching jobs came with men’s programs.
“I’m excited to be part of what Stacie is building and looking forward to capitalizing on the team’s success from last year,” Gottlieb explained. “I have fond memories from my time on The Mesa and am thrilled to be back in San Diego.
At GCU, Gottlieb was instrumental in the offensive game plan which saw the ‘Lopes have efficient and balanced scoring last year with five players scoring at least 200 points and ranking 13th in the nation in bench scoring. In his first season at GCU, they led the WAC in field goal percentage.
Prior to GCU, Gottlieb spent 13 seasons coaching in the Pac-12 with stops at Oregon State and California. While at Oregon State from 2014 to 2020, the Beavers made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years during the 2016 season. He served as assistant coach from 2014 to 2020.
Gottlieb coached two current NBA players in Gary Payton II and Drew Eubanks while at Oregon State. Payton II, the son of Hall of Famer Gary Payton, was an AP Honorable Mention All-American in 2016, two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year (2015, 2016) and a two-time First Team All-Pac-12 recipient (2015, 2016). Eubanks, a four-star recruit ranked No. 1 in the state of Oregon, averaged 13.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game his junior year and declared for the NBA Draft where he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs.
Before being hired at Oregon State, Gottlieb coached at California from 2008-2014 under hall of famer Mike Montgomery. He helped lead the Golden Bears to the Pac-10 men’s title in 2009 for the first time in 50 years. During his time at Cal, he coached seven players who played in the NBA in addition to three Pac-12 Players of the Year. Cal went 147-89 with Gottlieb on staff and had five 20-win seasons, advanced to the postseason all seven years (four NCAA Tournament, three NIT).
Prior to California, Gottlieb was an assistant coach under legendary Steve Fisher at San Diego State from 1999-07. He helped lead the Aztecs to their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 17 years in 2002. After going winless during conference play during the 1999-00 season, Fisher, Gottlieb, and staff helped orchestrate a 21-12 overall Aztec team that won the Mountain West Tournament Championship and stamped its ticket to the NCAA Tournament two seasons later.
Prior to San Diego State, Gottlieb spent two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Sacramento State University.
His coaching career began in 1994 when he was named men’s basketball assistant coach at Cal Poly. Gottlieb helped lead a team who won one game in 1994-95 to 16 wins the next season.
Gottlieb was a standout basketball player at El Modena High School in Orange, Calif., where he graduated in 1990. He played two seasons at Drake University in Iowa before returning to California to complete his studies at UCLA. Gottlieb earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA in history with a minor in business in 1995 and his M.B.A. from Cal Poly in 1997.
His late father, Bob, was the head basketball coach at Jacksonville University (1974-75) and the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin (1976-80). He was also an assistant coach for Jack Hartman at Kansas State, Eddie Sutton at Creighton, Tex Winter at Long Beach State and Ralph Miller at Oregon State. His brother, Doug, was a standout guard at Oklahoma State and currently serves as a basketball analyst and sports talk radio host.
