The University of Detroit Mercy women’s basketball program and head coach AnnMarie Gilbert has announced that Chanel Green will join the Titan staff as an assistant coach. Green played collegiately at East Carolina and Hampton and most recently was the Director of Basketball Operations at William & Mary.
“I am excited to add Chanel Green to our staff,” Gilbert said. “Chanel is a young, energetic leader who brings winning experience as a player and coach. As a player, Chanel was a key contributor to Hampton’s MEAC Championship in 2016-17. Her winning experience and leadership skills will be an asset to the growth of our program and the development of our players.”
Green started her coaching career as an assistant coach at Oberlin College — Gilbert’s alma mater — in 2018-19, helping the squad to 15 wins and a berth in the NCAC quarterfinals. Green was a volunteer assistant coach with Hampton in 2017-18, while also coaching at the high school level at Hampton High School in Virginia.
Last year, Green was the Director of Basketball Operations at William & Mary, managing all aspects of the budget, travel, among many other duties. William & Mary was picked to finish seventh, but went 21-8, including 12-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe were the No. 3 seed entering the CAA tournament before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season.

Being able to coach alongside such a dedicated and knowledgeable staff under the leadership of coach Gilbert is truly an honor. I am thrilled to begin building a championship culture here at Detroit Mercy.”
As a player, Green began her career at East Carolina before finishing at Hampton, where she helped the Pirates to 20 wins and the MEAC Championship as a team captain during her final collegiate season in 2016-17. She ranked second on the team in steals (48) and fourth on the squad in assists (46) during her senior campaign and was a two-year MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic and a three-year Dean’s List honoree.
Green, a native of Washington, D.C., is a 2017 graduate of Hampton University, earning a degree in Strategic Communications and received her Master’s degree also from Hampton in 2019 in Sports Administration.
Gilbert has revealed the majority of her staff and all three assistants as Green will join LaTanya Collins and Tim Webb for the 2020-21 school year. Graduate assistant Victoria Moreland also returns for her second season with the women’s basketball program in 2020-21.
