Graupe resigns as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Miles CC; Kortum named Interim Head Coach

Miles Community College Women’s Pioneer Basketball Head Coach Mark Graupe has resigned due to health concerns.

Graupe was named head coach in June of 2024 and began his first season with the Pioneers earlier this month. He began his long coaching career in North Dakota after graduating from the University of North Dakota in 1987.

MCC Athletic Director Jerry Olson expressed his gratitude for Graupe’s expertise and leadership during his time at the college and for guiding the team through key transitions. “I greatly appreciate having worked alongside Mark and wish him all the best as he prioritizes his health; his health and well-being are far more important than any game.”

“Coach Graupe’s dedication to supporting the student-athletes on the women’s basketball team has been invaluable,” stated Richard DeShields, vice president of student engagement and auxiliary services.

Current Pioneer Women’s Assistant Basketball Coach Sam Kortum has been named as the interim head coach, effective immediately.

Kortum has been working with the MCC Pioneer Women’s team as the assistant coach for the last two seasons, with experience coaching at the high school level in Terry, Montana, and as a Graduate Assistant Coach at the University of Idaho. Kortum also played basketball for the Montana State University Bobcats during her collegiate career.

“I’m confident in Sam coming in as the head coach,” stated Olson. “She has experience in collegiate level basketball as both a player and a coach and knows our team well.”
