Under the guidance of head coach Molly Goodenbour, the University of San Francisco women’s basketball program has made remarkable strides in two seasons. With that momentum building, USF Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell is pleased to announce that Goodenbour has been signed to a multi-year extension that will keep her on the sideline through 2024.
“Molly has quickly established that she is one of the best coaches in the WCC and all of college basketball. Her fast start at USF with back-to-back winning seasons in the face of some real adversity with injuries and timing of her hiring was a tremendous accomplishment,” said Sidwell. “We are looking forward to welcoming a strong incoming recruiting class to join our program and elevate our progress. USF women’s basketball is in great hands with Molly at the helm. We are proud to keep her here and look forward to sustained success.”
In her two years on the Hilltop, Goodenbour and her teams have put up impressive numbers, including becoming the winningest coach in USF history through 50 games (27-23), as well as through two seasons at 34-28 (.548). Goodenbour continues to build on her already impressive resume at USF, becoming the first coach to post winning overall and conference records in her first two seasons on the job.
The honors don’t stop there for Goodenbour. She posted a winning record as a first-year coach for the first time since Sue Rojcewicz did it (1982-83), while her teams have recorded back-to-back double-digit win totals in WCC play (11, 10) and earned a No. 4 seed in the WCC tournament (2016-17) for the first time since 2002-03. And that’s all while succeeding in the classroom: The Dons have posted back-to-back team GPA’s north of 3.40, culminating with a cumulative team GPA of 3.57 in the 2017-18 season.
“I truly enjoy coaching at USF and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to guide the women’s basketball program for the next five years,” said Goodenbour. “Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell and Deputy Director of Athletics Joan McDermott, have consistently provided the leadership, resources, and support to allow us to hire an experienced and dedicated staff, and recruit the type of student-athletes we need in order to build a strong, successful women’s basketball program. I look forward to coaching on the Hilltop in the years to come.”
Goodenbour, who owns a career 256-170 (.601) record as a head coach, and the Dons return strong pieces from the 2017-18 season. Joining them will be a large contingent of incoming talent. USF will have eight freshman, seven international and one domestic, coming to the Hilltop for the new season.
