Gomez named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Central Connecticut

Central Connecticut State University women’s basketball head coach Kristin Caruso has announced the addition of Courtney Gomez as an assistant coach. Gomez brings over a decade of coaching experience and a decorated collegiate playing career to the Blue Devils program.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Courtney to our staff,” said Caruso. “Her passion for the game, leadership experience, and deep ties to Connecticut basketball make her an incredible asset to our program. She’s a proven winner both on and off the court, and I’m excited for our student-athletes to learn from her.”

Gomez has served as the head girls’ basketball coach at her alma mater, Norwich Free Academy (NFA), since June 2019. In that role, she oversaw all aspects of the varsity program, including practice planning, scheduling, and fundraising. She also played a key role in shaping the sport statewide, serving as the coach representative to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. Gomez began her coaching career at NFA in 2015 as the junior varsity coach.

A 2008 graduate of the University of Hartford, Gomez captained the Hawks women’s basketball team during the 2007–08 season. She helped lead Hartford to three America East Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two first-round victories.

Gomez was a four-year starter at NFA and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2023. She earned Player of the Year honors from the Norwich Bulletin and The Day in both 2003 and 2004, and from the New Haven Register in 2004. During her high school career, she led NFA to undefeated state championships in 2001 and 2002, won four ECC Championships, and was a two-time All-State selection.

Gomez began her coaching career as a volunteer at Mercy High School in 2009, helping guide the team to a state runner-up finish. She spent seven seasons (2015–2022) coaching within the Connecticut Storm AAU program, and since 2019 has owned and operated the Wildcat Hoop School, a player development initiative. Gomez also gained collegiate coaching experience as an assistant for the Connecticut College women’s basketball team during the 2018–19 season.
