Katie Girten, who has spent the past year as the head assistant women’s basketball coach at MiraCosta College, has been named an assistant coach with the Western Oregon women basketball program, head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter announced on Tuesday.
"Katie is a great addition to our program and I feel very fortunate to have her joining the staff," Howard-Carpenter said. "As a player, Katie was an extremely hard worker and phenomenal shooter. She was the ultimate team player and always put the team before herself. Katie is very passionate about coaching and will bring positive energy and a wealth of knowledge to our program."
Girten joins the Wolves program after spending the past season as the top assistant coach at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif. During her time with the Spartans, Girten held responsibilities in nearly all areas of the program, including helping with individual skill development, organizing practice sessions, analyzing game file, initiating fundraising opportunities and monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes.
In addition to her role at MiraCosta, Girten spent the past year as an assistant coach with Cal-Swish San Diego. While at the youth basketball academy, Girten planned practices and developed skills of high school girls’ basketball players in the San Diego area.
Girten also gained coaching experience as a graduate assistant women’s basketball coach at Chico State following her playing career with the Wildcats. While at Chico State, Girten helped with individual skill development, strength and conditioning, team management and handled community service activities.
The native of San Diego, Calif., was a standout player for the Wildcats as she helped lead Chico State to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Sweet 16 as a junior and was named team captain as a senior. She also spent two years at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., as she was named San Diego Player of the Year following her sophomore season.
Girten graduated from Chico State with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and is currently completing her master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia University Irvine.
