University of North Florida Athletics has announced a leadership change within its women’s basketball program as head coach Darrick Gibbs will not return as the program’s head coach.
“After thoughtful evaluation of the women’s basketball program, we have decided to make a change in leadership,” Director of Athletics Nick Morrow said. “We as a department are very appreciative of the commitment Coach Gibbs has shown towards the program over the past eight years. We will forever be thankful for his service to the development of all the student-athletes he coached.”
Gibbs finished his eighth season as head coach of the UNF women’s basketball program Wednesday, concluding with a 95-138 career record. Gibbs was named the program’s second-ever head coach in April of 2015, taking over after 10 years as an assistant with the University of Miami.
The Ospreys finished the 2022-23 season 7-20 and 4-13 in ASUN play. North Florida notched three-straight-winning seasons between 2018-21.
Gibbs helped produce six postseason all-conference honors, 11 ASUN Players of the Week, 17 ASUN Newcomers of the Week and three ASUN Freshmen of the Week. The 2018-22 seasons saw the emergence of UNF great, Jazz Bond, winner of a UNF-record seven ASUN Player of the Week honors. She went on to become the program’s first-ever WNBA Draft pick last April after posting over 1,500 points and 800 rebounds at UNF.
The program had at least five ASUN Honor Roll recipients per season during his tenure, totaling three ASUN All-Academic selections, two College Sports Information Directors of America/College Sports Communicators Academic All-District laurels and the program’s first-ever ASUN Scholar-Athlete honoree in Rhetta Moore.
A national search to fill the position will be undergone immediately.
