Georgian Court University Director of Athletics & Recreation, Laura Liesman, has officially announced the hiring of Jasmina (Jazz) Perazic as the Lions’ next head women’s basketball coach.
"I am very happy to introduce and welcome our new women’s basketball coach, Jasmina Perazic, to the GCU family," stated Liesman. Coach Perazic has such a storied career in the game and is committed to the overall development of our student-athletes, both on and off the court … and with her strong belief in our university’s mercy core values, she will be a fantastic addition to our campus community."
"From the the moment I stepped on campus, I fell in love with Georgian Court," said Perazic. "I’ve always wanted to use basketball to influence, inspire and impact lives of young women in a constructive and positive way. There is, indeed, much more to basketball than basketball. The connection I felt to Georgian Court University was immediate. I fully understand the university’s aspirations, values and concerns.The sky will be the limit for the Georgian Court women’s basketball program. I am grateful and I am honored that I have been chosen as the new women’s basketball coach at GCU!"
Perazic recently completed her fourth season as an assistant with the Monmouth University women’s basketball program. Perazic came to the Division I school after serving as the head coach at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland for the previous four campaigns.
Jazz was named the 2009 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) District III National Coach of the Year, in addition to earning 2009 Prince George’s County Coach of the Year by the county’s Gazette newspaper.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Maryland, Jazz enjoyed a standout playing career with the Terrapins. The former All-American earned ACC Tournament Mvp honors in 1983 and eventually had her #4 jersey retired by the University. Her Terrapin teams won three ACC Championships, advancing to the Final Four in 1982.
A member of the Yugoslavian National Team from 1980-1992, Jazz suited up for Yugoslavia in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California and is a former MVP of the European Championships. The native of Serbia played for the WNBA’s New York Liberty in 1997 and is a member of the University of Maryland Hall of Fame.
In July 2013, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame announced that it would induct Perazic as part of its Class of 2014. The announcement was made during the 2013 WNBA All-Star Game
