Fitzpatrick named assistant at Samford

Samford University has hired Matt Fitzpatrick as an assistant women’s basketball coach, head coach Mike Morris announced Monday.

"We are very fortunate to have someone with Matthew’s experience join our basketball staff and excited about what he can add to our program," Morris said. "Matthew’s knowledge in recruiting will allow him to hit the ground running in the process of finding the right student athlete for Samford women’s basketball."

Fitzpatrick will be involved with all aspects of the program, and will serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator. He replaces Andrea Lemmond, who was recently named head coach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Fitzpatrick comes to Samford after spending the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach at UAB. During his season with the Blazers, the team finished 16-15 overall and 7-9 in Conference USA play. Fitzpatrick served as the assistant recruiting coordinator for the Blazers.

Prior to joining the UAB staff, Fitzpatrick worked at Truman State University, where he was the assistant men’s basketball coach for two seasons.

Fitzpatrick spent the 2009-11 seasons as the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Davenport (Iowa) Assumption High School and the 2005-06 season as the assistant boys’ coach at Davenport Central High School. He was also an assistant men’s coach as his alma mater, St. Ambrose University, during the 2004-05 season.

Other working experiences for Fitzpatrick include a stint at Caterpillar, Inc., where he was a sales representative from 2006 until 2011. In 2009, he was named the national salesman of the year and received the Bruce Stokdyk Award for his accomplishments.

Fitzpatrick was a four-year standout at St. Ambrose University from 2001-04, and was named an NAIA All-American and the Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year during his career.
