The Fitchburg State athletic department mourns the loss of assistant women’s basketball coach Paula (Goodchild) Gastonguay. Gastonguay passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
“Paula made an immediate impact on every community she was a part of. Paula was such a genuine and kind person with a vibrant personality. A Fitchburg High School athlete legend, our women’s basketball program was so fortunate to have her join us.” said Women’s head basketball coach Laura Pierce. ” She loved coaching, her community, and most importantly her family. Our hearts are with Greg, Sam, Jon and the entire Goodchild & Gastonguay families during this incredibly difficult time. Paula will be missed tremendously.”
During her tenure on the Falcon sideline, Gastonguay helped lead the Falcons to nine wins and a berth in the MASCAC tournament. Paula graduated from Fitchburg High School and was a member of the FSU Hall of Fame. She received her bachelor’s degree from Worcester State University and a master’s degree from Fitchburg State University.
Staff in the Counseling Services Office recognize that this may be a challenging time. Counselors will make themselves available for members of the community that may wish to connect, and discuss their own reactions to this loss. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made to the Paula Goodchild Gastonguay Scholarship Fund, that will be awarded to a student who exemplifies the characteristics that she held at Fitchburg High, c/o the Alumni Assoc. of FHS, Inc., P.O.
